ABOUT THIS 3D MODEL

The DeLorean Time Machine is a device invented by Dr Emmett Brown who used it together with Marty McFly and dog Einstein to travel through time within the iconic Back to the Future trilogy. Built from a 1982 DeLorean DMC-12 and fitted with a flux capacitor powered by plutonium, the vehicle surprised even its inventor having accelerated through the time with its tyres spinning and smoking. And now, by the efforts of one of our contributing 3D artists, you get an opportunity to build your very own DeLorean time machine by means of a 3D printer! The author of the model spent 290 hours working on the DeLorean for 3D printing and made sure to equip the DMC-12 with everything needed not only for time travel but also for an exciting and elaborate 3D printing vehicle project. During the first test Doc said, “If you're gonna build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style?”. We completely agree with the creative scientist and encourage you to cast all hesitations aside and take up the DeLorean for 3D printing in order to recreate your favourite appearance of the time machine with the help of three kits available. Just make sure you reach exactly 88 miles per hour already during the first try!

ADAPTATION FOR 3D PRINTING

DeLorean 3D printing model is a highly-detailed assembly model and its moderation and adaptation for different types of 3D printers took Gambody team 128 hours in total. In the course of the model’s preparation, Gambody team came up with 3 full kits of various assembly elements that will allow you to build a DeLorean time machine from either of the Back to the Future trilogy’s instalments and place your finished stylish DMC into one of the franchise’s iconic settings. In order to preserve the accurate likeness of an actual DMC-12 car, as well as Doc’s modified time machine, the model was divided into many parts that are to be assembled as if a real vehicle. Various special mechanisms were introduced into the model to make sure that the car’s opening parts like doors, windscreen wipers, hood, steering wheel etc. are movable. Taking into account the willingness of our customers to make their 3D printed DeLorean as impressive as possible, there were ensured tunnels for LEDs introduction and many elements like headlights, taillights sections, parking lights etc. are extracted and provided separately to be printed in a transparent filament. In order to give all BttF enthusiasts an opportunity to make the iconic vehicle true to life, all model’s sets of wheels, as well as the spare wheel stored in the luggage compartment, come with two variants of the tyre to choose from: one is meant for plastic filament, the other is hollow to be printed with flexible material. Decorative interior and exterior wiring do not come in STL files - 1.75mm PLA plastic or rope lights of your chosen colour can be used instead. All assembly parts are provided in STL files in recommended positions that were worked out in order to ensure the smoothness of the details’ surfaces after printing and so that the 3D printing beginners won't face difficulties when placing the parts on a build plate. The model's assembly requires additional "pins" to secure the parts of the 3D printed car. These pins do not come in STL files but can be made out of short pieces of regular 2.85 PLA, screws or wire of an appropriate diameter. We highly recommend that you watch "Assembly video" in the photo preview section before assembling the DeLorean time machine. When downloading any file that comprises the kit you will also receive "Assembly Manual" in PDF format.

This is the description of the model's Standard Assembly Kit 1. Additional Kit 2 and Kit 3 can be ordered as separate items as well.

SPECIFICATION OF THE STANDARD KIT 1

  • The 3D printing model's chosen scale is 1:8 and it was calculated from the actual length of the DMC DeLorean car that is 4216 mm;
  • Contains 88 parts that comprise the basic configuration of the 3D printing time machine;
  • A printed 1:8 DeLorean is 154 mm tall, 234 mm wide, 527 mm deep;
  • Assembly kit includes lock Ge_lock_10H x 36 to attach the model's parts securely without glue that needs to be printed 36 times;

CB - Car Body:

  • DeLorean’s distinctive opening gullwing doors;
  • Windscreen and windows are provided separately to be printed with the transparent filament;
  • Opening hood to access the luggage compartment;
  • Articulated windscreen wipers;
  • Car interior frame - floorplan forming the base for the potential passenger compartment that comes in Kit 3;

SW - Suspension and wheels:

  • Frame, upper frame and static suspension are an accurate likeness to Doc’s modified DMC-12;
  • Rim is to be inserted into the tyre and attached to the suspension with a pin and a gasket
  • Two variants of tyres: one is meant for plastic filament, the other is hollow for flexible material;

BL - Bumpers and Lights:

  • The front bumper has a "DMC" logo placed on a front grille;
  • The lower bumper grille is easily printed as a one-piece assembly part;
  • Headlights are extracted and provided separately to introduce LEDs into each section;
  • Headlight lenses also come separately to be printed in transparent filament to enhance the LED illumination;
  • The upper rear section has a separated numberplate;
  • Taillights are divided into several sections to print them with corresponding colours of transparent filament
  • The construction of the upper rear section also presupposes the introduction of LEDs;
  • Parking lights are extracted to print them with coloured filament;

NR - Nuclear Reactor:

  • Kit 1 features the nuclear fission reactor that was Doc's first modification of the car;
  • Has large steam vents, fuel elements, control rods etc.;
  • Blue tubes do not come in STL files - 1.75mm PLA plastic can be used instead.

ADDITIONAL DELOREAN 3D MODEL KITS:

Kit 2: Engines, Mr Fusion, Active Suspension

Kit 3: Car Interior, Wheels and Platforms

FAQ:

Below you can find printing recommendations for CuraSimplify3D and Slic3r software.

Cura printing recommendations:

These are basic settings that were tested in Cura 4.8.0 slicer.

The test models were printed on Ultimaker 2, Creality Ender 3, Creality CR-10S Pro V2, Anycubic I3 Mega, Anycubic I3 MegaS 3D printers with PLA and PETG filaments.

Disclaimer: The following printing settings are a recommendation, not an obligation. The parameters can vary depending on the peculiarities of your 3D printer, the material you use and especially the particular assembly part at hand. Each part that any model comprises often needs preliminary review and you are free to tweak the settings the way you find suitable.

Note:
- You can scale up the model (downscaling is not recommended!);
- All connectors should be printed at 100% Infill;
- For all parts of locks (“ge_lock” in “Source files”) you need to change "Brim" type to "Skirt" in Build Plate Adhesion section.
