Each material brings its own flair to your project, making it unique, beautiful, and impressive.

PLA stands for Polylactic Acid. PETG stands for Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol. When you look at the spools, you might think they are similar. However, these filaments are different and can elevate your experience to a new level once you master their properties and understand the PLA vs PETG usage advantages for yourself.

Read also: How to Fix 3D Printer Bed Adhesion Issues (Filament Not Sticking).

What Is PETG Filament?

PETG filament is made from PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) with the addition of glycol, making it fully recyclable. It is biodegradable under certain industrial conditions. This eco-friendly thermoplastic polyester is highly popular in the 3D printing world. It is perfect for making collectible figures and models to display on your shelf since it adds a lovely polished finish.

Maker: Eric Ieu. Swordfish II 3D print made of ERYONE Ultra Silk PLA.

Is PETG Stronger than PLA?

PETG is indeed stronger than PLA filament. Its flexibility, durability, and strength make it ideal for building functional objects, such as clips, hinges, and outdoor parts. PLA is less flexible and more prone to breaking.

Read also: Best Tips on How to Store 3D Printer Filament.

Difference Between PLA and PETG

In terms of pricing, PETG vs PLA are pretty similar. You can find a spool of these filaments for $12 to $13 or pay slightly over $20 for a pack of two. Prices depend more on colors than on the filament type. Unique options, such as changeable and metallic colors, tend to cost more than regular black, white, and single-shade ones.

If your printer doesn’t have a heated bed, it’s best to go with PLA because it works in lower temperatures of 55 °C to 60 °C (for the bed) and can “survive” printing at room temperature (nozzle temperature has to be between 190 °C and 220 °C). Users who want to use PETG will have to heat the bed up to 90 °C and set the nozzle temperature to approximately 240 °C to 260 °C. Besides, this material can release fumes, so good ventilation is required. However, it’s best to adjust the temperatures by brand.

The PETG vs PLA debate is ongoing. Some users prefer using PLA, which is much easier to prepare for painting, while others enjoy working with PETG. It’s absolutely up to your personal tastes and decisions. Experimenting with various materials is probably the best solution, as it lets you find the types of materials and brands you love most.

Read also: Best 3D Printer Ventilation System for Resin and Filaments.

Painting PETG

This type of 3D printing material is heat-resistant. It requires higher nozzle and bed heat temperatures, but if you overheat it, you can deform it and ruin your project. Thus, when you sand and smooth the PETG surfaces, you should be extra careful.

If you use supports, space them from the model parts by 0.5 mm or more to avoid damaging your project’s structure when removing the supports from a PETG project.

Maker: Geoff Bolton. It’s much easier to sand and prepare for painting, which makes it one of the most popular 3D printing materials among hobbyists with FDM/FFF printers. When comparing PLA vs PETG, most newbies choose PLA because it is super easy to use and user-friendly.

Maker: Constantin Arsu. 1/6 scale Tumbler 3D print (wheels are made of PLA).

FAQ

Is PETG more flexible than PLA?

Yes, it is.
