The battle between Gohan and Perfect Cell was slow to start, with Gohan initially struggling to match his father's performance. The Z Fighters, except Goku, grew concerned as the fight progressed. Gohan warned Perfect Cell to stop fighting, as his rage could unleash destructive power. However, this only fueled Cell's desire to push Gohan further. Android 16, in an attempt to stop Perfect Cell, revealed a self-destruction device but discovered it had been removed. Perfect Cell then created smaller versions of himself called Cell Juniors, who attacked the Z Fighters. Gohan, witnessing his friends' suffering, became enraged.
Android 16's head landed near Gohan, offering him advice and encouraging him to fight for his loved ones. Perfect Cell crushed Android 16's head, triggering Gohan's transformation into Super Saiyan 2. Gohan effortlessly defeated the Cell Juniors and began to dominate the battle against Perfect Cell. Even when Cell powered up and landed a hard punch, Gohan remained unfazed. Gohan taunted and overwhelmed Perfect Cell, almost destroying him with a powerful Kamehameha. However, Gohan chose to prolong Cell's suffering, allowing him to regenerate using Piccolo's cells. Cell's transformation reduced his speed, giving Gohan the advantage. Gohan kicked Cell, causing him to regurgitate Android 18 and revert to his Semi-Perfect form.
Semi-Perfect Cell threatened to destroy the planet and initiated self-destruction, but Goku sacrificed himself by transporting both of them to King Kai's Planet, resulting in its destruction. However, Cell returned in his "Perfect" form due to his cells storing the memory of his perfect form. He killed Future Trunks with a Death Beam and became even stronger than before, reaching "Ultimate Perfection." Gohan, initially distraught, welcomed Super Perfect Cell's return. Vegeta attacked Super Perfect Cell in a fit of rage but was quickly overpowered. Gohan intercepted a blast aimed at Vegeta, injuring his own arm severely. Goku communicated with Gohan from the Other World, motivating him to believe in his power.
With newfound hope, Gohan prepared a one-handed Kamehameha to counter Super Perfect Cell's Solar Kamehameha. Despite being disadvantaged and doubted by others, Gohan received support from his father and the Z Fighters. Gohan unleashed his full power, resulting in a fierce clash of Kamehameha waves. Vegeta eventually joined the fight, powered up, and assisted Gohan.
