The plot of the sci-fi horror classic “The Thing” (1982) revolves around the extraterrestrial parasite that was awakened from its slumber and started haunting every living creature it could find to assimilate. Unlucky as he was, Vance Norris together with a group of American scientists got stranded in the depths of Antarctica, destined to fall victim or save the world from the hostile life-form. Deeply impressed by Rob Bottin’s practical effects and the alien’s uncanny design, our contributing 3D artist spent 174 hours on sculpting Norris assimilated by the Thing from the iconic “chest chomp” movie scene. The author of the model put his utmost efforts into recreating the appearance of the horrifying creature, adding some personal touch to its design. His model eerily captures the imitation of Norris’ body standing upright with the Thing crawling out of the torn abdomen. The Thing’s six enormous spider-like legs stick out of the gape and will attack without hesitation. The contributing 3D artist made sure to add some elaborate details to the ravaged flesh, fully portraying the gruesomeness of the transformation. Just like the movie depicts, the head on Norris’ dead body is hanging down on the strings of skin and goo, threatening to detach itself and escape danger. The Thing is propped up on its masterly executed long, segmented neck, on top of which a grotesque copy of Norris’s face growls in fury. You can clearly pinpoint the monstrous distortion in the Thing’s face that faintly resembles what once was a human. We believe that such a meticulously detailed model deserves to be a part of every desktop horror installation. However, be careful - no one knows if the Thing can assimilate 3D printed models too.


Norris-Thing figurine for 3D printing is a static assembly model and its moderation and adaptation for different types of 3D printers took Gambody team 52 hours in total. The figurine’s anatomy was thoroughly reviewed during the moderation process for the model to look proportionate and as horrifyingly realistic as possible. The figurine’s cutting was done by our team with surgical precision along the lines of the creature’s anatomical segments, as well as the lines of Norris’ clothing to conceal the seams of where the assembly parts are to be connected. The cutting was also chosen to ensure minimal material expenditures on generated supports and correct fitting of the assembly parts into the build plates of the smallest 3D printers. Some parts in DLP/SLA Eco 1.0 version were hollowed out to minimize the amount of resin needed for printing. In order for you to achieve the cleanest 3D printed result, both of Norris-Thing’s heads, each of its spider legs, toothy stomach, shoes, etc. were made into separate files. All the assembly parts come in STL files in recommended positions that were worked out in order to ensure the smoothness of the details’ surfaces after printing and to make sure that the 3D printing beginners won't face difficulties when placing the parts on a build plate. When downloading any model's file you will also receive "Assembly Manual" for FFF/FDM 1.0 and DLP/SLA 1.0 versions in PDF format.

The figurine is saved in STL files, a format supported by most 3D printers. All STL files for 3D printing have been checked in Netfabb and no errors were shown.

The model's scale was calculated from the height of Charles Hallahan, the actor who played Vance Norris in the movie, which is 1800 mm. The 3D printing figurine's chosen scale is 1/8 for the FFF/FDM version and 1/16 for the DLP/SLA/SLS versions.


FFF/FDM 1.0 version features:
- Contains 27 parts;
- A printed model is 389 mm tall, 233 mm wide, 200 mm deep;
- The assembly kit includes locks to connect the figurine's parts securely without glue. Lock 26_ge_lock_7S(x10) needs to be printed 10 times; lock 27_ge_lock_10H(x2) needs to be printed twice;
- All parts are divided in such a way that you will print them with the smallest number of support structures.

DLP/SLA 1.0 version features:
- Contains 8 parts;
- A printed model is 195 mm tall, 116 mm wide, 100 mm deep;
- All parts are divided in such a way to fit the build plates and to ensure that support structures are generated where needed.

DLP/SLA Eco 1.0 version features:
- Contains 8 parts;
- A printed model is 195 mm tall, 116 mm wide, 100 mm deep;
- Contains some hollowed out parts to save resin.

SLS 1.0 version features:
- Made as a solid one-piece figurine;
- A printed model is 195 mm tall, 116 mm wide, 100 mm deep;
- Contains 3 parts - a one-piece model and the figurine with the platform separated.

This model was tested in Cura 3.5.1 and printed on an Ultimaker 2 in PLA material. Below you can find printing recommendations for CuraSimplify3D and Slic3r softwares.
