The Cataphract BattleMech was originally designed by the Confederation from other Mechs’ parts they could still produce after the beginning of the Succession Wars. Therefore the heavy MWO robot was dubbed a FrankenMech for its appearance albeit it was created from the ground up. It is known that Cataphract was still at the production stage when the Clan Invasion erupted and even lacking any advanced Star League technology was immediately brought into action. The 3D artist, the author of the Cataphract model for 3D printing was also designing his BattleTech robot from scratch drawing inspiration from the legendary video game. The Mech’s modelling took its author 58 hours in total to complete the action heavy BattleTech for all the universe's fans. The robot's movable parts that were later introduced by Gambody team allow you to change the model’s pose after the Cataphract’s assembly, creating an impression of the 3D printed BattleMech rushing about the Inner sphere region. 


MWO Cataphract 3D printing model is an action assembly model and its moderation and adaptation for different types of 3D printers took Gambody team 13 hours in total. The model’s cutting was chosen by our team to minimise the amount of filament needed for generated support. All the assembly parts are provided in STL files in recommended positions that were worked out so to ensure the smoothness of the details’ surfaces after printing and that the 3D printing beginners won't face difficulties when placing the parts on a build plate. To allow the Cataphract's multidirectional movement and rotation the ball-and-socket joints and one-axis joints with lockers were introduced. The joints that ensure the Mech's movability are provided as separate files for you to be able to print them again if the joints' friction happens to lose rigidity. The armament the Cataphract is equipped with is assembled in such a way that can be potentially replaced when the alternative Guns Pack for the Mech is released.

The model is saved in STL files, a format supported by most 3D printers. All STL files for 3D printing have been checked in Netfabb and no errors were shown.

The model's scale was calculated from the Cataphract's actual height that is 15000 mm. The 3D printing model's chosen scale is 1/60 for the FFF/FDM version and 1/100 for the DLP/SLA/SLS versions.


FFF/FDM 1.0 version features:
- Contains 45 parts;
- A printed model is 293 mm tall, 204 mm wide, 167 mm deep;
- Made with special joints to ensure the model's articulation;
- Assembly kit includes locks to connect the parts without glue. One lock 45_Ge_lock_10H_x2  needs to be printed 2 times;
- All parts are divided in such a way that you will print them with the smallest number of support structures and so to ensure the smoothness of the details’ surfaces.

DLP/SLA/SLS 1.0 version features:
- Contains 14 parts;
- A printed model is 176 mm tall, 122 mm wide, 101 mm deep;
- Made with special joints to ensure the model's articulation;
- All parts are divided in such a way to fit the build plates and to ensure that support structures are generated where needed.

This model was tested in Cura 3.4.1 and printed on an Ultimaker 2 in PLA material. Below you can find printing recommendations for CuraSimplify3D and Slic3r softwares.
